Supportive Independent Living for Youth and Parents

INDEPENDENT LIVING REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUTH AND PARENTS

This component of Independent Living is to serve Parents who are in need of housing in order to regain the care of their child (child must be on court order). It is designed to provide a peace-of-mind for parents who are faced with difficulties locating stable housing for their families. Here they will maintain family unity while SIL will offer training and supervision for the youth and parent in the area of productive independent living skills. All parents must be capable of managing an independent living setting with minimal support services.

  • Parents must have stable income and/or employment or have an employment plan prior to their entry in the program.
  • Must provide proof of income i.e. SSI benefits or W4 income (self-employed cannot be considered)
  • Must be willing to develop a realistic family plan each month to help improve the home structure 
  • Must be willing to disclose any debt that hinders their future success (transitioning into their own apartment)
  • Parents with a poor rental history will be able to rebuild their rental credibility 
  • Parents will be require to contribute half cost of the rent 3-6 months into their residency 
  • Must sign a month-to-month lease and be willing to enter into a memorandum of understanding with MCC

  • Leisure skills activities/routine family enhancement
  • Development of career goals
  • Budgeting and a host of other life skills
